Zinnfiguren or flat lead soldiers, hand painted on both sides and showing back and front of all the figures, 46 pieces in all. Nice vivid colours. Approx 1½ inches (40mm) tall to the tip of the busby,

These flats are from the OLD German firm of Heinrichsen and are from a Swiss collection and pre date 1939

A grenadier (derived from the word grenade) was originally a specialized soldier, first established as a distinct role in the mid to late 17th century, for the throwing of grenades and sometimes assault operations. At this time grenadiers were chosen from the strongest and largest soldiers. By the nineteenth century, the throwing of grenades was no longer relevant, but grenadiers were still chosen for being the most physically powerful soldiers and would lead assaults in the field of battle. The term grenadier was retained or adopted by various elite infantry units, including the Fusilier-Grenadiers and Tirailleur-Grenadiers of Napoleons Imperial Guard.
